Purpose - Self-Sufficiency
According to Data USA- Poverty is a complex issue that affects people from all walks of life, but it disproportionately affects women. Women are more likely to live in poverty than men, and the gender pay gap is just one factor that contributes to this disparity.
According to the World Bank, women make up the majority of the world’s poor. In 2018, it was estimated that 50% of the global poor were women. In the United States, women are more likely to live in poverty than men. In 2020, the poverty rate for women was 12.9%, compared to 10.7% for men. This disparity is even wider for women of color, who are more likely to live in poverty than their white counterparts.
In Detroit, 31.5% of the population has been determined (197k out of 626k people) to live below the poverty line, a number that is higher than the national average of 12.5%. The largest demographic living in poverty are Females 25 - 34, followed by Females 35 - 44 and then Females 55 - 64.
The systemic inequities and underinvestment that women experience throughout their lives puts them at greater risk of living in poverty: The cumulative impacts of the gender wage gap, overrepresentation in low-paid jobs, caregiving responsibilities, lack of education, domestic violence, alcoholism/drugs etc.. have all played a role in women (black women especially) being at an economic disadvantage
